Mendoza is one of the best places to visit in the West of Argentina. It is a great city, there are a lot of things to do and the people is friendly and helpful. The city was founded in 1561. Is a vibrant city, renowned for its marvelous art and History. This land is the most important viticulturist center in south America and houses hundreds of wineries. The city is centered around Plaza Independencia, with a pedestrian street, Calle Sarmiento, running through the center. Most travelers that backpacking in South America visit Mendoza for mountaineering, climbing and take a closer look at Argentine wines. Most of the wineries are located at about 30 minutes from Mendoza city. Mendoza History: With the arrival of the Spaniards, the territory of Mendoza was occupied by the Huarpe Indians. whose tribes spanned far beyond just the Mendoza area.
They were a peaceful group, they were hunters and collectors, related to the Pehuenches. The first Spaniards arrived around the year 1550 from Perú. In 1561, the city of Mendoza was founded, which was then to become the province capital. A man by the name of Pedro del Castillo was the one who officially named the city of Mendoza and was named in honor of the governor of Chile bearing the same name. Mendoza Plaza San Martin: Plaza San Martin is one of the most active squares in the city. Is located in the center of Mendoza city. In center of this beautiful plaza is a must see sculpture of the liberating Argentine General, Jose de San Martin. Near the plaza you will find also a lot of cheap Hotel and Hostels.
