Atacama Desert
What
Is The
Atacama Desert
So what is Atacama Desert: Atacama
and patagonian deserts in the north of Chile is filled with natural
attractions. Atacama desert is according to NASA
and National Geographic the driest desert in the world
and it is virtually sterile because it is blocked from moisture on both
sides by the Andes mountains and by coastal mountains. The
gateway to exploring the sparsely populated Atacama Desert region is through
San Pedro de Atacama and ecotourism friendly Lauca National Park.
San Pedro de Atacama is located at 6,600 feet above sea level.
The Atacama is 15 million years old and 50 times more arid than
California's Death Valley. Atacama desert it is about
600 miles long but less than 100 miles wide. The north
end of the Desert is near the border of Chile and Peru.
Salar de Atacama is the largest salt flat in Chile. It is surrounded by
mountains and has no drainage outlets.

What The New Age Traveler Says...?
Atacama
and patagonian deserts,
Is
one of the places in the world that makes travellers to understand
why they travel. Simply if you don't see San Pedro de Atacama
you are not in Chile. You will be impressed by The
Moon Valley that is a formation of stone and sand.
Atacama Desert is an astonishing rainless plateau in South
America, it is hard to survive in the Atacama Desert. Few people, animals, plants, or even microbes live
there. The desert has also silver and copper
mines, and extensive nitrate and iodine deposits. San Pedro
retains its colonial charm of narrow streets and has a church dating
back to 1577.
