Salvador Pelourinho And Mercado ModeloSalvador is the capital of the state of Bahia and the largest city in north-eastern Brazil. The city lies between green tropical hills and broad beaches along the bay of Todos os Santos. Was the first town to be founded in Brazil by Thome de Souza, the Portuguese governor of Brazil, on 29th of March in 1549. It was the seat of the Portuguese colony for almost two centuries. The legacy remains today in its large black population, and the resulting culture in many ways outshines the rest of Brazil. In music, many of the greatest names from the mid-20th century to the present hail from Salvador.
Pelourinho
Pelourinho means whipping post in Portuguese. Is the Old City and the heart of Salvador. You can't go to Salvador, without spending time to the colonial-era buildings and winding cobblestone streets that clustered around the Largo do Pelourinho.

The city has become a favorite resort of both local people and visitors. Is also attractive numerous backpackers travelers that visit Brazil, mostly because is cheaper compare to other cities in Brazil. Slavery was outlawed in 1835, and over time, this portion of the city, though home to artists and musicians, fell into disrepair. Unfortunately Pelourinho is surrounded by favelas and the tourist must be extremely careful over there! especially at night. Armed guards are in every corner and the watching for crimes. However Pelourinho is must place for visitors that visit brazil and want to see Bahias culture.
The streets between Terreiro de Jesus and Largo do Pelourinho is where you can see many things like churchs, shops, handcrafts, restaurants, pubs, museum, artists and tourism offices, each place with its own History. Like everywhere else in Salvador, you can bargain for the best price at the shops.
Mercado Modelo
The best way to visit mercado modelo is the Elevador Lacerda that is about a century old and connect the lower city with the historic center. Located in the (Cidade Baixa) that means lower city. Is a traditionally Salvador's commercial center. The building was restored completely to its original form after a fire burned it to the ground in 1984. Is an old slave trading market that became a flew market after slavery was abolished. Mercado modelo today selling all kinds of hand made souvenirers. There are also a few food venues upstairs and typically there is entertainment of some sort in and around the market.
