BAGAN
Bagan was the capital of
Ancient Myanmar, and is the main tourist destination of the
country. Nyaung is a modern market town and administrative
centre, is the favorite home base for

Bagan.
Located 15 minutes from
Airport and situated on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River,
about 193 km south of Mandalay. Myanmar Bagan is the most fascinating

rulers of Bagan
Dynasty to build innumerable pagodas and temples in and around the
city. The city became one of the most important centres of Buddhist
learning.
Comparisons to
Angkor Wat are probably inevitable,
but Bagan is a very different place. In Angkor there are less
than 50 monuments, at Bagan are more than 2,000 temples still
standing.

Ananda Temple
Ananda temple is one of the most famous
temple in Bagan is one of the four main temples remaining. Located just to the east of the old city
walls. Is reflects the transition from the Early to the
Middle period of Myanmar Bagan
architecture. The temple was completed during the reign of King
Kyanzittha (r. 1084-1113), who reportedly was inspired by eight
visiting Indian monks and their story of earlier life in the
legendary Nanadamula cave in the Himalayas. The Ananda both
sought to recreate a vision of this cave and reflect the endless
wisdom of the Buddha. It also inspired the temple-building of later
rulers who constructed their own works of merit.
Thatbyinnyu Temple
The temple was built about the middle of
the 12th century A.D. by King Alaungsithu
Located just inside the
southeastern corner of the old city wall,
Thatbyinnyu is one of Bagans tallest temples.
Mahabodhi Temple
This temple was built and modeled
after seeing the
Mahabodhi Temple in Bihar, India. The name was also taken
from the original one. Mahabodhi
Temple was built by King Zeyatheinkha Like the temple from India,

Bu Paya
Known to be the
earliest pagoda in Bagan It is situated on the bank of the
Ayeyarwaddy River.

crenulated semi-circular terraces overlooking the river, is
conspicuous landmark for river travelers.

Nat Taung Kyaung
located in the vicinity of
Taung-bi village is a very old decaying wooden structure with
intricate ornate carvings and is worth a visit. It stands in a
center of a wide variety of trees and vegetation it is the regions
oldest and finest wooden monastery. our local driver assured
me that it was over 200 years old.
Gawdawpalin Temple
One of the largest and most imposing of
the Myanmar Bagan temples, was built by King Narapatisithu
after building the Sulamani Temple. It is located just to the
north of the present Archaeological Museum. Its surrounding with 4 Buddha images on
the four sides of the ground floor.
The temple was heavily damaged during the 1975 earthquake and was
reconstructed in following years.
