London Horse Guards: Queen's Life Guard
Horse Guards was originally built to house the Sovereign's Life Guards. It is still the exclusive official Royal entrance to St.James's and Buckingham Palaces. London Horse Guards is named after the troops who have mounted the Queen's Life Guard on this spot since the Restoration of King Charles II in 1660. The Household Cavalry consists of two separate regiments, the Life Guards, who wear scarlet tunics and white plumed helmets, and the Blues and Royals, who wear blue tunics and red plumed helmets. The colourful ceremonial of mounted Guard Changing by the Queen's Life Guard takes place on the Parade Ground at Horse Guards daily at 11am. Horse Guards Parade is the setting for various military ceremonies throughout the year including the Trooping the Colour which marks the Queen's official birthday. Every day, visitors can see the changing of the Horse Guards at 11am from Monday to Saturday and at 11am on Sundays. This is free.
