FORBIDDEN CITY

The PalaceBeijing Forbidden City, called gugong in Chinese used to be the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties. In imperial times it was called as the Purple Forbidden City from the association of the emperors with the color of the Pole Star. This name is derived from the fact that it was inaccessible to ordinary people. The first palace was completed in 1420. The complex is huge, covering 961 m from north to south and 753 m from east to west. Now it is open to the public as a palace museum where people can see the great traditional palace architecture, enjoy the treasures kept in the palace, and learn of the legends and anecdotes about the imperial family and the court.

What The New Age Traveler Says...?

The New Age TravelerBeijing Forbidden City. Is the place that you see in all of the great movies about China, with actors like Jet Li and Jackie Chung. When I first entered the Forbidden City  I was really impress by the apparent immense size of this palace. The Forbidden City is the best preserved imperial palace in China. Most travelers enter the Forbidden City from the Tian'anmen Gate. For security reasons the City is enclosed by a 10 meters high city wall. I am really happy that I was have the luck to visit one of the largest and most significant complexes in China.
