Bintan
Bintan is the largest of the 3200 islands in the
Riau archipelago and the third largest of the 27 province in
Indonesia, located just 45 klm south east of Singapore and about
an hour of Batam island. If you come from Batam the ferry
stops in the main town of
Bintan, the Tanjung Pinang. Don't take any of the black taxis if your plan is
to go in the north tourist side, because this drivers don't have the
permission to go to the tourist area.
The island has a population of more than 200.000 people, and
like the rest of Riau is a true mix of cultures like Malay,
Bugis, Chinese and the Orang Laut.
Tanjung Pinang is located on the western part
of the Bay of
Bintan, is an old town with a lot of wooden houses in a
really tropical atmosphere, is "real" border town of Indonesia, home
to electronics factories, fishing villages, many prostitutes and
some low-key beaches. A 10 minute ride with a motorbike will drive
you to oulao peniental, originally the home of the Malacca
sultanate, if you want to stay more in the south you can visit one
of the many hotels in the capital of Bintan.
BINTAN NORTH SIDE
When you arrive
in the north side you really surprise from the different that is
exist, Bintan leads a double life: the northern portion of
the island, Bintan Resorts is a colony of Singapore, full of
expensive resorts and manicured lawns. As it has very little in
common with the rest of the island, the area is separated from the
rest of Bintan by barbed wire, checkpoints and armed
guards. Most of the tourism is
concentrated on the north coast around Lagoi.
The resorts have 18 klm of white beaches and azure waters rich
in marine life accommodation options including hotels and
condominiums. Is full of natural beauty that is reminiscent of Phuket 20 years
back. We decide to leave the
beach and to go to the river for more action on a boat journey on
the
Sebung river and we keep a lookout for mangrove snakes, monkeys
and lizards. These forests protect the
coast from erosion whilst trapping sediments in water flowing off
the land. Journeying through the Sebung River, home to rich mangrove
forests and waterways, observe a myriad of
colourful flowers and fruits that stand
out against a backdrop of the fleshy green leaves of the mangrove
trees.
