Bahrain Fort: All About Qal'at al-Bahrain

Bahrain Fort: Qal'at al-BahrainQal'at al-Bahrain Historically, this is one of the most important sites in Bahrain. Also known as the Portuguese Fort, The Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1522 on the ruins of an earlier small fort built by the people of Bahrain. Bahrain Fort lies on the northern coast of the island. The Portuguese added the high walls, the huge square towers and a surrounding moat which is still visible to visitors. The Bahrain fort is well worth taking a good couple of hours to look around. The archaeological site of qalat al bahrain is one of the things that you will never forget about Bahrain. The wonderful architecture and the historical importancehe have made it a World Heritage Site. The honor was given by UNESCO in 2005. This fort is also controlled the navigation between a small island and the main Bahrain island. My local taxi driver guide is assured me that Bahrain Fort is the most popular historical sight in Bahrain, after the National Museum.
